Trustees play such a vital role in the running of Allsorts and we are so grateful for all their support. We caught up with Kate Rodman, one of our parent trustees to find out why she decided to join the team.
Why did you want to become an Allsorts Trustee?
I wanted to become a member trustee for Allsorts as the charity benefits both myself and my son tremendously. It’s provided fun activities, as well as growing a network of friends and ongoing support from the team. Giving back in some way felt important to me and I wanted to be part of a team which makes it possible for other families with SEND needs to have positive community experiences. I also felt driven to volunteer for a disability charity which places value on individual member wellbeing and listens to the needs of its families.
How long have you been a trustee? / Has it been like you expected?
I’ve been an Allsorts member trustee for six months now. Taking on the role has given me an insight into the ongoing challenges the charity faces when securing funding. I’ve witnessed the team working tirelessly to generate an income to provide the range of services for its members at subsidised rates. I hadn’t realised just how enterprising, resourceful, and creative the staff and trustees are at keeping the charity afloat.
Have you learnt anything?
Becoming a trustee has not only given me the opportunity to act as a voice for its members but also sit alongside a team with a diverse range of skills and knowledge. It’s given me an inspiring take on how a charity operates and evolves over time. Each trustee brings a unique perspective and I’ve learnt a lot from others with a different skill set to my own.
What would you say to someone considering joining Allsorts as a volunteer trustee?
If you’re considering applying for the role of trustee I would say, absolutely give it a go! Regardless of your personal situation or professional background, all trustees have a voice and are valued at the meetings. It’s a great opportunity to support the charity to evolve, give back to the community and sit alongside a team of people who all really care about the future of Allsorts.
Is there one key thing that you feel proud about Allsorts?
I feel proud to be associated with Allsorts as the team provide such a welcoming and safe space for families to thrive and receive support. Just knowing Allsorts have an ongoing presence in our community gives me and my family sense of belonging and the chance to connect with others in a similar situation.
